Tesco Bags Of Help

Tesco Bags Of Help

Furze Platt Scout Group’s headquarters refurbishment programme has been selected to receive funding as part of the Tesco Bags of Help community funding scheme.

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 all raised from the 5p bag levy being awarded to local community projects.

Bags of Help offers community groups and projects across the UK a share of revenue generated from the 5p charge levied on single-use carrier bags. The public will now vote in store during July & August on who should receive the £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 awards.

Customers that shop at the local stores listed below will receive a token which they can use in store to vote for one of three community projects over the course of the next two months with the number of votes given to each project determining who receives which amount of money.

HQ building works: Can you help?

building-1080597_960_720

We’re now in the final planning stages for implementing our changes to the HQ building on Cookham Road. Obviously, we’re keen on keeping the costs of this project to a minimum so we are now on the lookout for anyone that can help us realise our plans.

We’re specifically interested in anyone that has any of the following skills, either professionally or at a competent DIY level:

  • Carpentry
  • Plumbing
  • Tiling
  • Plastering

To complete the works, we will also need the services of a qualified electrician.

If you can assist us in any of the capacities we would very much like to talk to you. Please contact Ray Tucker on 07803 891674 or at ray54tt@aol.com.

All change at HQ

Architect plans

Plans are afoot for a major overhaul of our HQ building so that we can make better use of the space that we have and allow the group to continue its expansion. Whilst we can’t make the building itself any bigger, we can re-organise the interior to provide more usable space.

The works will be created in three stages

  1. Conversion of the room to the right of the existing entrance to a disabled/able WC.
  2. A new entrance door at the front of the building to replace the existing garage doors.
  3. Conversion of the store room (old garage) to a meeting room.

The end result will be that we have a much more flexible building including two sizeable meeting rooms (the existing upper room plus a much enlarged ground floor room).

The following link shows both the existing and planned layouts. We expect to make some small changes to the plan as it stands but it gives a good idea of the direction that we are moving in.

Scout HQ – Draft plan

We’re extremely grateful to James Spiteri, a beaver parent and architect, who has drafted these plans for us. In the coming weeks we will be on the lookout for anyone that can help us turn these plans into reality.

Furze Platt Scout Group AGM 2016

There was also a special award for Sam for completing 3×3  Tower hikes over 3 years – our only current Explorer to achieve this – well done Sam!.

Furze Platt in the press – New Cub Pack

IMG_2665

We invested 10 Cubs in our new Tuesday night pack couple of weeks ago. We have already received 3 requests for new members to attend and with 2 full Beaver colonies it won’t be long before the 2nd pack is up to full strength. With our planned leader moves, vacancies exist with our Monday Beaver colony for an assistant leader and a regular section assistant. Please contact the GSL email directly if you can help.

Group Scout Leader’s update May 2016

Neil Trevedi

Hello!

I am Neil Trivedi and I am the GSL for Furze Platt Scout Group.
I would like to keep you updated on activities within our Scout Group, let you know what’s coming up and also use this as a way to ask for help with keeping our group going.

As you might have seen we have been in the Advertiser on successive weeks. The first article covered the investiture of 10 new Cubs into the new Tuesday Cub pack and the meetings I have held to update you on the group and our current support vacancies. The second article covered our “base” on the Cubs incident hike where Tony and the Cubs enjoyed making twists over an open fire.

With our leaders, we have a few changes coming up. Luke will move from Beavers to Wednesday Cubs in the autumn and will be promoted to leader, Juliet will also move from Beavers to the Tuesday Cub pack to become its new leader. Nick Hopper will take over from Simon as the Scout leader in the autumn and Simon will support Scouts and Cubs as an assistant leader as his work allows.

We also have 2 new assistant leaders who have joined recently, Irene and Mahshid, they will be working through their training to become Assistant Cub leaders in due course.

As many of you heard at the parent meetings we are looking for help to run our sections, with the recent moves and new leaders, the focus is on our Monday Beaver colony where we need an assistant Beaver leader and a regular section assistant. The colony has Carole as its leader and is supported by Marion and 2 young leaders as well. So you will be joining a good team. Please let me know if you can help – give me a call or email (07758 953366 or n.trivedi@hotmail.co.uk).

HQ – Is currently getting painted and made ready for the Polish children’s language school due to start in September. Clearly we want to keep it clean for our new guests – Juliet runs the cleaning Rota for HQ and has struggled to get volunteers to help – if you can spare some time, please drop her an email: juliet@gjbentley.com. We will also be looking for volunteers to help paint the downstairs shortly.

Campsite – we have made a lot of improvements since the fire last summer and we have also used the opportunity to update several areas of the campsite. We still need some robust park benches for the quiet area and also some robust picnic benches for the eating area outside the kitchen. If you have one spare or know anyone who wants to donate one or can get one at a good price – please let me know, we can normally arrange some kind of transport.

Dates for your diary:

1) AGM at the campsite Inc. wine and nibbles! 10th June 1830-2000

2) Summer Open Day at HQ 1100 2nd July

I look forward to hearing from you.
